The Importance of Gender Equality in Education

Gender equality in education is an ongoing issue. It is related to the discrimination against girls, which leads to many of them dropping out or not attending school at all. The belief among parents that girls do not need education is one of the causes. However, education is the right of every child, regardless of gender, as each gender has its own needs and interests.
To achieve gender equality in education, it requires the implementation of gender equality strategies in development. The implementation of gender equality is a fundamental strategy built to integrate gender as an integral dimension of planning, formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of development policies and programs in order to achieve gender equality and justice. The goal of gender mainstreaming is to ensure planning, formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of policies and programs that consider the experiences, aspirations, and needs of both men and women.
By conducting direct observations in educational environments such as schools and classrooms, we can observe the practices and interactions between students, teachers, and school staff. This can provide an understanding of potential gender discrimination in everyday interactions within the classroom and other educational settings.
It is undeniable that Indonesia has made significant progress in achieving gender equality in the past decade. This can be seen through increased literacy rates, school participation rates, employment rates, and policies to promote a gender-just society. However, there is still a paradox that although Indonesian women have access to education, their participation in economic activities remains low.
In the field of education, gender equality can be implemented early on through schools and teachers in the learning process. This can minimize or eliminate gender disparities in education. The implementation of gender equality in the learning process can minimize or eliminate discrimination against women in the field of education.
To achieve gender equality in education, complex and integrated efforts are needed. Some efforts that can be done include raising public awareness of the importance of gender equality in education, providing gender-sensitive teacher training, and developing a gender-based curriculum.
Therefore, gender equality in education can be achieved through three aspects: the right to access education, rights within education, and equal educational outcomes. In this regard, discrimination against all women and girls, as well as various forms of violence against women and children, both in public and private spheres, need to be eliminated.
Here are some ways to achieve gender equality in education:
- Expand quality education access for all students with justice and inclusivity.
- Ensure that all educational materials used represent gender equally.
- Open up all fields of education to both women and men without restrictions.
- Eliminate gender bias in education, such as stereotypes that affect differential treatment between males and females.
- Increase awareness of the importance of gender equality in education through campaigns and educational programs.
By realizing gender equality in education, it is hoped that students will have equal opportunities to develop their potential and contribute to the betterment of the nation.
